ISABELA
ISLAND
The main wildlife interest here are the various salt and brackish lagoons close to the town which harbour a wide range of coastal and sea birds including many migrant waders. This is probably the best "birding" place in the islands. It is also the landing point for visiting Tintoreras, Giant Tortoises Rearing Center and Flamingos lagoon.
- Starts: 06h30 AM departing from Puerto Ayora
- Arrival to Isabela: 09h00 AM aprox
- End: 17h30 PM aprox
Once you arrive to Isabela Island the tour begins at the main passenger dock where a small boat will be boarded to go to the islet "Las Tintoreras". This islet offers a diverse life starting from iguanas that are usually in the stones, Blue-footed and even penguins that approach curious visitors. The islet is located south of Puerto Villamil in the Isabela Island about 10 minutes by navigation from the pier. On this site there is a clear water crack that occasionally houses a large amount of Tiburones "Tintoreras" (Triaenodon obesus), which come to this site to rest and swim.
After the walk we will enjoy some snacks prepared by the crew and then we will have the beginning of the aquatic activity, a snorkeling session to observe part of the wonderful marine life that Galápagos offers. Reef fish, turtles, sharks, rays, and penguins can be spotted here frequently.
It should be noted that the penguin population is found throughout the bay of Puerto Villamil and especially among the islets of Tintoreras and around. During this activity visitors will have necessary equipment such as mask, snorkel, and wetsuit during the cold season.
After the water activities we will return to the passenger dock to begin the tour in the village, Puerto Villamil. We will enjoy Isabela Island from its interior, visiting the Arnaldo Tupiza breeding center to observe Giant Tortoises in captivity; then making a strategic stop at La Laguna de Flamingos in the Los Humedales complex.
At the end of this activity visitors will be directed to a local restaurant with a strategic location that allows you to appreciate the ocean on both sides, in this place we will enjoy a lunch specially prepared for real explorers.
Once lunch is over there will be a break to prepare for the return navigation to Santa Cruz Island at 3p.m.
